Our Students and Visitors

Gathering Experiences and Memories...

Untitled-7Untitled-3N7342

Campanario's students and visitors are principally high school and university students, teachers, and environmentally concerned visitors originating from Canada, the United States, and Costa Rica.  Recently, European and Asian families have also found us, way off the beaten track.  One thing common among all is a wonderful mindset of desiring to learn, of needing to work together for the the good of this planet, and of sharing their experiences with their own communities when they return home.

Campanario is able to handle up to 44 individuals for courses, for reunions, and/or for corporate get-aways, emphasizing a learning experience.  During a stay at Campanario, students and visitors learn to understand and recognize the importance of various tropical ecosystems: lowland tropical rain forests, mangroves, tidal pools, and coral reefs.  Students become more aware of environmental problems and begin to envision possible solutions.  While many students are biology or environmental science majors, many others are opening their eyes for the first time to the natural world.  For many, just living "off-the-grid" is a significant stretch of their comfort zones.

The educational programs at Campanario are designed for the active student and adult, requiring  a fairly good physical condition and ability to swim.  In the event the visitor/student is older or limited in his/her ability to hike for extended periods of time, the program is modified for shorter distances, at a slower pace, and to include rest periods.  If requested, hikes to the Corcovado National Park or to the local school can be substituted by a boat trip to either location.

We, at the Campanario Biological Station, believe that working with our community is a high priority in order to preserve the surrounding natural areas.  Because of this we frequently develop service project activities with our students, volunteers, and visitors.

To date, students have come from over 40 different countries, and from over 40 states within the United States.  More than 50 different schools or educational programs have studied at Campanario, many of whom return year after year.

Click here for Who is Studying at Campanario.  This is both a list of student groups which have
studied in Campanario as well as a listing of the origins of the students, both of country and of
state within the United States.
