Jungle Notes & News

30 March 2003

Here is a comment sent to me by a good friend, Carlos, another member of the Costa Rican Network of Private Reserves, who is also fighting to save the rainforest.

Translation:
Hi, good evening my colleagues and friends!!! I am coming with my hair standing on end (from my arms, because I no longer have any on my head) because we just counted, today Friday the 28th of March, 2003, 73 trucks loaded down with logs traveling past EARTH (University) to the crossroads of San Luis of Santo Domingo of Heredia (a town heading into San Jose) and in the plain light of day. (This was) wood not from plantations and it didn't stop just tree log after log after log, and the last ones enormous.

The question is, and pardon my ignorance, What has happened to the cutting prohibition? What agreements were made? What is MINAE (The Ministry of the Environment) doing? And What can I do, apart from just counting trucks with logs?
